Educational Materials and Informative Publishing To Improve the Astronomy in Schools

Two-sided viewer designed by an astronomy teacher for ease in seeing and identifying element and molecular spectra from gas tubes.

"One of the biggest challenges that I have faced when using other spectrum viewers is that the students never know what they are supposed to see and struggle to hold their viewers at the correct angle to the light source.  The Classroom Astronomer Spectrum Viewers alleviate both of these issues and provide a simple but effective classroom instruction tool.  I find these viewers to be much more useful and easier to use than models I have used in the past." - November 2012 NSTA Science Teacher review.

Features

  1. No longer hunt the Internet or multiple textbooks for reference spectra--the 16 most common gas tubes found in physics, astronomy and chemistry labs/classes are on the Viewer!

Spectra, divided into four groups from the Periodic Table, that are included are: Noble Gases--Helium, Neon, Argon, Krypton, Xenon; Metals--Sodium and Mercury; Non-Metals: Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Chlorine, and Iodine; Molecules and Mixtures--Air, Water, Carbon Dioxide.

  2. Extra-large viewing window, 3 inches (7.5 cm), makes it easier for one or more students to see the spectrum.

  3. The comparison spectra were made using the same diffraction grating film, sharing the same scale, resolution and light distribution as the viewed spectrum when directions (included on both sides of the Viewer) are followed.

  4. Measuring scales are approximately proportioned to sine-theta instead of linear like most hand spectroscopes, accommodating for the Law of Diffraction and removing common systematic errors.

  5. Brightest visible line markers help eliminate false identifications.

  6. Specifications:  5.75 x 8.5 inches (~14.5 x 21.5 cm).  Comes with instructions/notes sheet.

"...puts basic spectroscopy in the hands of the masses at an affordable price."  - Mike Marks, Edutarium, MA

"After using these, my students didn't want to use hand spectroscopes. These were easier to use!" - D. Franklin, Mercer University Atlanta, GA
